Dennis's Office

Every year, my boss Dennis heads off to the northern shores of Michigan to the family cabin for his annual vacation. This year, during his three-week absence, a co-worker and I decided to have a little fun with the boss's office, as a surprise upon his return.

The original idea of filling his office with packing peanuts was quickly discarded. We realized that while our chief was a super guy with a wicked sense of humor, ultimately it would be we, the pranksters, who had to clean up the mess. And it's a big office...

So we moved to Plan B, which was to use balloons instead. A collection among the department staffers and other coworkers ensued, and with that a tank of helium was rented for the purpose of filling more than 700 balloons...

The balloon filling begins. We kept the lights off and the door closed to keep the knowledge of what was going on to a minimum. No need in Dennis getting advance warning, right?

The same shot in the beginning, only this time I remembered to use the flash...

Having just finished the CMYK conversion on our entire art database, we thought the inclusion of CMYK balloons was appropriate. The Schoolbus Yellow we were forced to purchase, however, wasn't really Yellow...

Progress is being made...

Over half of the ceiling is covered at this point and we're making our way down the back wall with the intent of covering the window...

A very cool effect with no flash as the office fills with more balloons.

The same cool effect with even more balloons.

While hard to see, we actually have two "peaks" of balloons, one in the back of the room, and one right in the middle. If you look closely, you can see the differences from the front to the back of the picture.

More balloons are added...

Sitting in Dennis's chair, looking up into the balloons...

A wider-angle perspective...

About three-quarters of the ceiling is now covered, including the corner to the left hidden by the wall, and we're close to hiding that window.

This is where we stopped the balloons on the ceiling so they wouldn't interfere with the door opening.

Having run out of balloons that were strictly CMYK, a coworker was nice enough to donate some other colors to the cause.

Looking towards the front of the office...

We realized that by Monday morning the balloons would lose enough helium to fall to the floor. This was fine with us, as you'll see below. In the "meat" of the balloons on the floor, they came up to one's knees...

"What the f---?" Dennis returns!

Like I said, we didn't care that the balloons fell to the floor. We liked it even better this way...
